Shimla:  Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur presided over the commencement of the second phase of the Himachal Pradesh Crop Diversification Promotion Project in Dharamsala town on Tuesday, which is supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Thakur stated that the state was committed to the development of rural areas because they house more than 90 percent of the population and approximately 70 percent of them rely on agriculture for their livelihood. The Chief Minister noted that the second phase of the JICA-funded crop diversification project would be implemented in all 12 districts and would significantly improve the socio-economic situation of farming households.

Despite limited financial resources and a slowdown caused by the coronavirus epidemic, the state administration has launched a slew of new initiatives to enhance irrigation, agricultural, horticulture, forestry, and related industries, as well as ensure the state's overall and equitable growth. Since 2011, the initial phase of the initiative, which has been implemented on a trial basis in five districts: Mandi, Kangra, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, and Una, has essentially revolutionised the farmers' economies in these areas.

According to Thakur, the project's major goal was to propagate a successful crop diversification strategy and grow the vegetable area in the project region from 2,500 to 7,000 hectares by 2031.
