Shimla: Himachal Pradesh has suffered extensive damage from recent floods and heavy rainfall, with estimated losses exceeding ₹700 crore, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu reported on Sunday. Since the onset of the crisis on June 27, 2024, the state has faced significant destruction of infrastructure and assets.
CM Sukhu revealed that while some bodies have been recovered, 55 individuals remain missing. He emphasized that relief efforts are underway at full throttle, with continuous monitoring of the situation. “We have begun relief work urgently and are praying for mercy for Himachal Pradesh,” Sukhu told reporters. “Our focus is on managing the ongoing relief and search operations effectively.”
In response to the devastation, Deputy Chief Minister and Public Works Department Minister Vikramaditya Singh has visited the affected regions. His immediate priority is to reopen 193 closed roads and repair critical bridges. Singh urged the Union government to provide substantial support, stressing that current efforts should be focused on relief rather than political considerations.
"We are hopeful for generous support from the Union government," Singh said, highlighting the critical need for assistance amidst the ongoing flood crisis. He also commended the work of the NDRF, SDRF, and state police for their efforts in the rescue operations.
Search operations resumed early on Sunday morning, with Himachal Pradesh Police Director General Atul Verma affirming that efforts will continue until every missing person is accounted for. The situation remains dire, especially after a cloudburst on August 2 washed away a portion of the Manali-Ladakh highway in Chikka village, Lahaul, and Spiti district.
The Indian Army, along with NDRF, SDRF, Home Guard, and CISF teams, is engaged in extensive restoration efforts. Temporary bridges have been constructed to restore connectivity and facilitate ongoing rescue operations. Rampur SDM Nishant Tomar reported that four villages remain cut off, though temporary solutions are being implemented to aid these areas.
Food supplies are being distributed to affected families, and residents have been advised to avoid rivers and streams. The Home Guard Commandant, RP Nepta, detailed that search operations resumed at 7 am in Rampur’s Samej area with the deployment of five JCBs to assist in the recovery of bodies.
The state's immediate focus remains on restoring infrastructure, providing relief to affected individuals, and ensuring that all missing persons are found.
