Himachal Pradesh: Chief Minister Jairam Thakur of Himachal Pradesh announced on Monday that the state will shortly implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Thakur, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, arrived at Kangra for a two-day visit. Workers from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) greeted him warmly at the airport.

"We will have it done (UCC) as quickly as possible. The situation in Himachal is unique compared to other states, and it will have no negative impact on the Muslim community. This is a step that I believe will be welcomed by everyone, especially Muslim women. They would be able to live a healthy family life, which will be helpful to them" Thakur said.

Thakur earlier said that the introduction of UCC is not ruled out and that "a decision would be made after evaluating it." Officials are looking into it, he said, and no decision will be made quickly. In various states across the country, a discussion over a common civil code has erupted.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, recently stated that UCC should be adopted in the greater welfare of Muslim women, or polygamy would persist.

Earlier, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh announced the formation of a "high-powered" expert team to write a standard civil code for the state.

Meanwhile, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has called the uniform civil code "an unconstitutional and anti-minorities move," and has accused the Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and central governments of using rhetoric to divert attention away from inflation, the economy, and rising unemployment.
