Himachal weather update: Cloudbursts, heavy rains wreak havoc; 2 dead

KULLU: Two people were found to be still alive under debris after a landslide in the Kullu region of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday. In other areas, flash floods washed away shops and vehicles causing highways to be closed.

In Anni Tehsil, 10 stores and three vehicles were destroyed by a cloudburst. In Deuthi, an outdated bus stop and a panchayat building are also in danger of being destroyed by flooding.

In Shimla, three compact vehicles and a pickup truck were destroyed by floodwaters.

According to Sudesh Mokhta, director of the state disaster management department, Chavelu Devi (55), and Kritika (17) died in Kullu after their home in Khadel village, Sheel gramme panchayat, Anni tehsil, was struck by rubble after the landslide at around 9 am.

 

Another incident in the area occurred at around 7.30 am when a cloudburst at the Deuthi gramme panchayat in the Anni tehsil caused 10 shops and three vehicles to be washed away.

At Deuthi, an ancient bus stop and a panchayat building are also in danger of being washed away, and officials from the revenue department have already arrived to assess the situation. 

Meanwhile, Sundernagar recorded 141.8 mm of rain in the previous 24 hours, followed by Hamirpur with 120 mm, Sarkaghat with 112.3 mm, Paonta Sahib with 97.6 mm, Chopal with 74 mm, and Mandi with 69.8 mm, the local meteorological service said.
