Guwahati: Six days after registering a historic victory in Assam, the BJP's mystery in the state is still going through the dilemma of 'who will be Chief Minister.' The current CM Sarbananda Sonowal submitted his resignation to Governor Jagdish Mukhi amid speculation about the face of Assam's next CM post.

The legislature party has since elected Himanta Biswa Sarma as its leader. It was decided that he would become the next CM of the state. A meeting of MLAs was held today to seal the name of Assam CM, which was attended by Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh, and Sarbananda Sonowal. On Saturday, the two veteran leaders Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma were summoned to Delhi and held talks. Official party sources said Himanta was sealed as the new CM late in the night after four rounds of talks.

Sources claimed that it was CM Sonowal who proposed Himanta's name during the legislature party meeting in Guwahati on Sunday. Sonowal will in turn be inducted into the Union Cabinet. Sonowal has been the Union Sports Minister in the past. The duo flew to Guwahati on a chartered aircraft together on Saturday night. The BJP leadership announced the sending of Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and party general secretary Arun Singh as central observers at the meeting late in the night.
