A Muslim family from Kolkata was converted to Hinduism by the members of Hindu Samhati in an event on Wednesday. The journalists were kept away from the family and were attacked when they tried to speak to the family consisting of 14 members. ABP Ananda, a Bangla news channel, reported that the event took place at Rani Rasmoni Avenue.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has condemned the incident and promised to act against the guilty, according to ABP Ananda.

Hindu Samhati is a right-wing group based in Kolkata. It is headed by a former member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh named Tapan Ghosh. The group was also active during the 2010 Deganga riots and claimed about the assault against Hindu women and children during the riots.

The country witnessed other incidents where Hindutva groups were seen harassing people in an attempt to “safeguard” culture. In Ahmedabad, goons from Bajrang Dal harassed couples on the Sabarmati riverfront who were celebrating Valentine’s Day. Another video floated on Twitter which showed Bajrang Dal members creating havoc at a mall in Hyderabad preventing them to celebrate Valentine’s Day. In Nagpur, members of Bajrang Dal issued warnings to couples to get them married if found celebrating Valentine’s Day in public.
