KARACHI: A Hindu temple in Karachi was vandalised on Thursday, sparking dread and terror among the city's Hindu residents, according to a media report. The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Shri Mari Maata temple in the city's Korangi area, as per Express Tribune.

The police arrived in the area after getting information about the vandalism and investigated the temple, as well as sending more forces into the area.

Farooq Sanjrani, the SHO of Korangi, said that "five to six unknown individuals entered the shrine and vandalised it before fleeing." He said the unidentified assailants had been charged.

Unidentified people allegedly desecrated a mediaeval shrine on the banks of the Indus River near Kotri last October, as per media reports.

In the past, after an eight-year-old Hindu child, who allegedly urinated in a local seminary, was granted bail by a local court in August 2021, scores of people reportedly vandalised a Hindu temple in the town of Bhong and blocked the Sukkur-Multan Motorway. Hindu temples have been vandalised frequently in Pakistan.

According to official estimates, there are 75 lakh Hindus living in Pakistan. Sindh province is home to the bulk of Pakistan's Hindu community, who share their culture, traditions, and language with Muslim citizens. They frequently report being harassed by extremists.
