Interdisciplinary artiste Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee had the opportunity of meeting and interacting with Buddhadeb Dasgupta twice. emembering the legendary director who has to his credits films like Tahader Katha, Kaalpurush, Uttara, and many others, Sujoy said, “I had read out a script written by his former wife as part of a play. Buddhada was present at the auditorium. Post the event, he came backstage and praised my work and appreciated my narration.

That was my first meeting with him. Years later, in 2016, when I was at The Toronto International Film Festival, I had the pleasure of watching his film Tope. Sohini (Dasgupta, present partner) and Buddhada were also present at the do. He received a standing ovation post the screening. I can’t even imagine this scene in Kolkata where hardly a handful of people would have turned up at a cinema hall to catch the film and appreciate the iconic filmmaker’s work. I congratulated him after the film’s screening and we had a brief discussion about arts and cinema. It was a memorable experience,” shared Sujoy. The sudden demise of the filmmaker has left a deep void in world cinema, says Sujoy, adding, “His lyrical imagery, his political statements and treatment of sexuality are unique and make him a part of world cinema. A master filmmaker has left us too soon.”
