Onam has special significance in the major festivals of South India. As such, this festival is celebrated not only in South India but all over India, although in Kerala it is celebrated with great pomp and fervor. This festival is specially celebrated in the fields for waving (harvesting) the crop. On the day of Onam, special poojas are performed in the houses.

A mythological belief behind the festival of Onam is also very popular. Accordingly, the festival of Onam is celebrated to welcome a demon. According to mythological beliefs, there used to be a demon king named Mahabali in Kerala. However, especially this festival is related to farming. For farmers, it is like a huge festival.

On Onam day people worship Shravan Devta and Pushpadevi for a good yield. Diwali-like scenes are seen in South India on this day. People clean the house on this day and like any new bride, the house is decorated with flowers. Like Ganeshotsav, the house is decorated continuously with flowers for 10 days. On this day, Rangoli is also made at home and outside the house.

This is such a special festival

The Onam festival also has the support of the Government of Kerala. The government of Kerala names this day as the Pertayak festival. On this day, along with cultural events of boat races, dance, music, etc., a Mahabhoja is also organized. On the other hand, people make delicious sweet dishes, mainly Pachdi Kallam, Sambar, Banana, and Papad chips, Ollam, Dawa, Ghee, etc. on this day.
