History-sheeter killed in alleged police encounter in Tamil Nadu

V Durai Murugan, a 39-year-old history-sheeter from Kootampuli village in Thoothukudi district, who was killed in a police encounter in Pottalkadu Muttiahpuram village, was caught by the police on Friday afternoon. SP S Jayakumar said, "When an SI and three other constables went to arrest Durai, he attacked one constable and the SI with a sharp weapon, forcing the police to open fire on the history-sheeter." SP Jayakumar, Town SP Ganesh and Muttiahpuram Inspector Jayashilan inspected the spot. Police said the body of the accused has been sent to Thoothukudi government hospital for post-mortem.

There were 19 cases against Murugan, including seven murder charges, the police said. Speaking to media persons, Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police (SP) S Jayakumar said, “Durai had killed a man in Tenkasi district last week and buried the body in Tirunelveli. Since he was the prime accused in the case, a special team under the leadership of Sub Inspector Rajaprabhu was formed to nab Durai at the earliest.

Similarly, in another alleged police encounter, a 25-year-old man named Murtasa was gunned down by the police at Sriperumbudur in Kancheepuram district. Murthasa along with an accomplice named Naeem Akhtar allegedly snatched a gold chain from a 55-year-old man who was waiting to board a bus near a toll plaza in Sriperumbudur. Police claimed that when some men tried to chase them, Murthasa allegedly opened fire on the crowd, though there were no casualties. After the police claimed that he was surrounded by the police near the Mevalurkuppam lake in Sriperumbudur, Murtasa allegedly tried to escape by firing at the police. He was reportedly killed in retaliatory firing by the police.
