Three-time Olympic gold medalist legendary hockey player Balbir Singh Sr. has been admitted to the Fortis Hospital in Mohali after his health deteriorated. Kabir, grandson of Balbir Sr. told the language, 'His health suddenly deteriorated last evening. His condition is still critical, he has been admitted to Fortis where he is in ICU.

Balbir, 95, had to spend several weeks in PGIMER, Chandigarh last year due to respiratory problems. Family sources said that he was having trouble breathing for the last two to three days, his various organs have been affected and overall the condition is not very good.

Balbir played a key role in winning India's gold medals at the London (1948), Helsinki (1952) and Melbourne (1956) Olympics. He scored five goals in the 6–1 win against the Netherlands at the Helsinki Olympics, and the record is still intact.
