Besides acting, Tamayo was also a lifeguard and surfing instructor in Hawaii. His sudden demise has sent shockwaves through the film industry. According to media reports, a shark attacked Tamayo near Goat Island off the coast of Oahu in Hawaii. A person saw Tamayo covered in blood and immediately notified the emergency services. Officers arrived at the scene and brought him to shore on a jet ski, but he had already succumbed to his injuries.

Reports indicate that the actor's body bore multiple shark bite marks. Following Tamayo's death, ocean safety officials posted shark warnings in the area. He had taken a break from his lifeguard duties and had gone surfing at the time of the incident.
