Popular film producer Prince Azim, the son of the Sultan of Brunei has died aged 38. Malaysia government declared a week of national mourning after the prince died on Saturday in the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. The government did not disclose the cause of his death.Azim's funeral took place on Saturday, and the nation has now entered a seven-day period of mourning.
According to local media reports, Prince Azim had been in hospital "for some time" and had suffered from liver cancer. He was fourth in line to the southeast Asian nation's throne and carved out a reputation in Hollywood as a movie producer, died on Saturday morning. He was well known for hosting extravagant parties with celebrity guests including Pamela Anderson, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey.
He had produced few movies, including the 2014 feature "You're Not You" starring Hilary Swank, building a part-time career in the film industry despite international anger over his father's move toward draconian punishments in Brunei. Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin offered his condolences in a statement posted to Facebook, reading: "May his soul be blessed by Allah and placed among the righteous."
