Home Ministry seeks report from Mamata government , asks what steps to stop violence ?

Kolkata: The Centre has asked the Mamata Banerjee government to submit a report on the rising political violence in West Bengal. The Union Home Ministry has asked the Mamata government to submit a report on the steps taken so far to prevent political violence, investigate and take action against the culprits. The Home Ministry said that the ongoing violence in the past few years is a matter of serious concern.

The Centre has issued an advisory to the state government, pointing to the increasing incidents of electoral violence, political violence and killings of people between 2016 and 2019. The Centre has said that "the ongoing violence over the years is a matter of grave concern." The Centre is to submit a report from the Mamata government. The Central Government has expressed serious concern over the present situation in West Bengal.

The Union Home Ministry has said that the incidents of violence in West Bengal have increased to 1035 in 2018 as compared to 509 in 2016. In 2019 alone, 773 incidents of violence have taken place so far. In Bengal, the death toll in 2018 has risen to 96 while 36 people were killed in 2016. In 2019 alone, 26 people have lost their lives so far. The Home Ministry has said that the trend of violence since 2016 shows that the Mamata government in the state has failed to maintain law and order and create a sense of security among the people.
