New Delhi: In response to nationwide protests following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the Union Home Ministry has issued a significant directive. The ministry has now mandated that all states must provide updates on their law and order situations to the Home Ministry every two hours.

This decision comes as a measure to address the rising crime rates and ensure better monitoring of the law and order situation across the country. The Home Ministry’s order instructs all state police forces to report the status of law and order regularly, particularly in light of the ongoing protests. These reports are to be sent to the Home Ministry Control Room in New Delhi via email, fax, or WhatsApp every two hours.

The directive, issued on Friday, states, "Please send the law and order situation report of two consecutive hours in this regard to the Home Ministry Control Room (New Delhi) through fax/email/WhatsApp from 4 pm today." This move comes amid widespread protests by doctors and medical staff, which have disrupted healthcare services across the country. The protesters are demanding the implementation of a central law to protect healthcare workers, the declaration of hospitals as safe zones, and mandatory safety protocols.

The incident that sparked these protests occurred on the night of August 8-9, when a 31-year-old postgraduate resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was brutally assaulted and murdered. She was found unconscious in the seminar hall and later died from her injuries. The post-mortem report revealed that she had been raped and strangled, leading to widespread outrage and protests.

On Saturday, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) called for a 24-hour nationwide strike to protest the incident. Following the strike, the IMA wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the lack of safe spaces for women and the need for better security measures in healthcare facilities. They emphasized that this heinous crime has shocked the entire nation, and called for urgent action to protect healthcare workers.

The protests continue as doctors and medical staff demand justice and stronger protections in their workplaces.
