NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will discuss the Assam Rifle's operations with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs on Wednesday. "The Parliamentary Committee on Home Affairs to hear the views of the Ministry of Home Affairs on the functioning of the Assam Rifle," according to official communication from the Rajya Sabha secretariat. The Union Home Secretary and other high-ranking Ministry officials, as well as members from Assam Rifle, will brief the House panel.

Following the retirement of Congress Rajya Sabha Member Anand Sharma, the 30-member committee is now led by Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a Congress MP from West Bengal. Anand Sharma's seat in the Rajya Sabha is yet to be filled. The House panel consists of 31 members: 21 Lok Sabha members and 10 Rajya Sabha members.

The Assam Rifle, also known as the "Sentinels of the North East," is stationed in the north-eastern states to conduct counter-insurgency operations in the north-east and other areas where the Army deems necessary, and to ensure the security of the Indo-China and Indo-Myanmar borders during peace and "proxy war." The Force is led by a Lieutenant General of the Army, and the Directorate General of the Assam Rifles is headquartered in Shillong, Assam.

The Assam Rifle is one of six Central Armed Police Forces under the dual administration of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Defence, with a sanctioned strength of about 63,000 security personnel and 46 battalions.
It is the only paramilitary organisation with a dual command structure: the MHA has administrative responsibility, while the Indian Army, which is under the Ministry of Defence, has operational control.
