Chennai: After his side’s 21-run loss against Australia in the third One day International, India skipper Rohit Sharma termed the defeat as a ‘collective failure’. Virat Kohli’s half-century went in vain as Adam Zampa’s 4-wicket haul and all-round team efforts helped Australia defeat India by 21 runs in the 3rd  and last match of the ODI series at MA Chidambaram Stadium on March 22.
I don't believe there were too many runs. We played bad batting. Partnerships are essential, and we failed to accomplish that today. You should apply if you have experience playing on these kind of wickets. It was crucial for one hitter to continue after the start and extend the game. It simply did not occur. I learned a lot. The nine ODIs since January have taught us a lot that we can use going forward. We must recognise our areas of improvement. That is a collective failure, and this series has taught us a lot. The Australians deserve praise. In a post-match presentation, Rohit stated that both spinners as well as their seamers put pressure on the opposition.
Australia won this match, 2-1, to win the three-match ODI series. India has not lost a series at home since 2019. Back in March 2019, they had also previously fallen to Australia 3-2 in an ODI series. Australia, who had chosen to bat first, was bowled out for 269 runs in 49 overs. With a 68-run partnership, the opening pair of Travis Head (33) and Mitchell Marsh (47) got the innings off to a strong start. Nevertheless, all-rounder Hardik Pandya turned the game in India's favour by getting rid of both of the openers as well as Steve Smith (for 0), dropping the opposition to 85/3.

David Warner (23) and Marnus Labuschagne (28) failed to score big. For 138 runs, half of the Australian batting order was in the dugout. After that, the sixth wicket was held together for 58 runs by wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey (38) and Marcus Stoinis (25), which was eventually broken by Axar Patel. Australia reached 269 after a 42-run partnership between Ashton Agar (17) and Sean Abbott (26), who were the eighth and ninth wickets. Both Kuldeep Yadav (3/56) and Hardik Pandya (3/44) made crucial runs when they needed to. Axar Patel (2/57) and Mohammad Siraj (2/37) both gave strong performances.
