In a surprising departure from her husband, former U.S. President Donald Trump, and his Republican Party, former First Lady Melania Trump has voiced strong support for abortion rights in her upcoming memoir. The book, set to release a month before the next presidential election, highlights Melania's firm belief in a woman’s right to control her own body.

"It is crucial that women have the freedom to make decisions about having children, based on their own beliefs, without interference or pressure from the government," Melania wrote in her memoir, excerpts of which have been shared ahead of publication. This stance stands in stark contrast to the views expressed by Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance, who have been vocal opponents of abortion rights.

Melania emphasized, "Why should anyone, other than the woman herself, decide what she does with her own body? A woman’s right to individual liberty gives her the power to make this choice. Denying that right is denying control over her own life." She added that this belief has been central to her thinking throughout her adult life, a rare public expression of her political stance.

Divergence from Donald Trump on Key Issues

In addition to her views on abortion, Melania Trump opens up about her life in Slovenia, her modeling career in New York, and her relationship with Donald Trump. While acknowledging some political disagreements with her husband, particularly on immigration, Melania revealed that they addressed such issues privately. However, she made it clear that her position on reproductive rights has always been different from her husband's, and she is unwavering in her belief that individuals must prioritize their well-being.

"I’ve always believed that it’s important for people to take care of themselves first," she wrote, framing her support for abortion as a fundamental right. "We all have the basic right to live our lives fully and with dignity, including the right to make choices about our own bodies and health."

Melania also defended the right to abortion later in pregnancy, pointing out that most late-term abortions historically occurred due to severe fetal abnormalities, which could result in stillbirths or the death of the mother. "These cases are extremely rare and involve careful consultation between a woman and her doctor. As a society, we should accept these commonsense principles. Timing, in these cases, truly matters," she explained.

Context of Roe v. Wade Reversal

Melania’s pro-choice stance comes after the Supreme Court, with a conservative majority, overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision during Donald Trump’s presidency. While Trump leveraged the ruling to gain favor with his evangelical and Christian supporters, he later distanced himself from the controversy, avoiding backlash from Democrats.
