New Delhi: The Centre's Modi government has admitted in the Lok Sabha that it is earning about Rs 33 per litre of petrol and Rs 32 on diesel. The rate of earnings has been continuing since May 2020. The government also said that there is no proposal yet to bring petroleum products under the purview of GST.

The government said the income of Rs 33 per litre of petrol and Rs 32 on diesel is being met through central excise duty (basic excise duty, cess and surcharge) since May 6, 2020. In addition to this central government tax on petrol and diesel, VAT is also levied by different state governments. Between January 1, 2020, and March 13, 2020, the Centre received Rs 20 from petrol and Rs 16 from diesel. However, between March 14, 2020, and May 5, 2020, the Central government was making an income of Rs 23 on petrol and Rs 19 on diesel.

On December 31, 2020, the last day of the year, 1 January 2020, the government was getting Rs 13 more on petrol per litre and rs 16 more on diesel. This is the case as of today.
