New Delhi: The power output of small modular reactors (SMRs), also referred to as miniature nuclear reactors, varies depending on the configuration and design details. Reactors with an electrical output of under 300 megawatts (MW) are commonly referred to as SMRs. There are, however, even more compact designs that can generate a few megawatts or even less of electricity.

Consider the typical range for SMRs, which is somewhere between 50 and 200 MW, to give you a general idea. These more compact and portable smaller reactors come with benefits like simpler deployment and adaptability in their use.

They can be applied in a variety of situations, such as isolated areas, small communities, or as an addition to current power grids.

It's crucial to keep in mind that a nuclear reactor's power output is typically measured in thermal energy rather than electricity. Although a nuclear power plant's conversion efficiency can vary, a typical value is around 33%. This indicates that the reactor produces about one-third of its thermal energy as electricity.

As a result, a 100 MW SMR producing 33 MW of electricity would be considered to be operating at 33% efficiency. Remember that these figures are approximations and may change depending upon the reactor's particular design and operational circumstances.

It's important to note that various design options are being considered for SMRs, which are still under development. The design, technology, and operational parameters of a particular SMR would determine its actual power output and efficiency.
