SSC CHSl exams are conducted once a year by the Staff Selection Commision. The Candidates who have recently passed higher secondary exams are eligible to apply and appear for this exam through which they can secure a government job, but cracking this exam is not easy. After a careful look at the past SSC CHSL result, one can easily notice the rising trend in Tier-I and Tier-II cut offs. 

With that said, candidates must have a clear preparation strategy in place and must put their best efforts in order to get through SSC CHSL exam. Given below are some preparation tips for both Tier-I and Tier-II exams that could help the candidates in their preparation.

Preparation Tips for SSC CHSL Tier-I Exam 

SSC CHSL Tier exam comprises 100 multiple type questions, divided into four sections namely, Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning/General Intelligence, English Language and General Awareness. Though, there is no sectional cut off in this exam unlike banking exam, but each section carries equal marks. So, it is important to perform equally best in all in order to qualify through the Tier-I exam. Given below are some section-wise tips a candidate should follow while preparing for Tier-I exam.

1) Quantitative Aptitude

Candidates should reinforce the basic concepts, learn short-tricks and formulas and last but not the least, they should solve and practice as many questions as possible in topics such as Algebra, Mensuration, Basic Trigonometry, Ratio and Proportion, Percentage, Profit and Loss, Time and Work, Discount, and Partnership etc.

2) General Intelligence and Reasoning

Some major topics that a candidate must focus on in general intelligence and reasoning that carry high weightage in Tier-I exam of SSC CHSL are Analogy, Coding and Decoding, Classification, Number and Figural series, Non-Verbal reasoning, Word building, Figural patterns etc. Candidates must practice as many questions in the above mentioned topics, so that they become well versed in these topics and achieve a high score in this section.

3) English Language

The key to score above 20 marks out of 25 in this section in Tier-I exam is that a candidate should have basic understanding of rules in grammar, develop a good vocabulary and comprehensive reading skill. Also, attempting questions and quizzes on Antonyms/Synonyms, Active/Passive voice, Direct and Indirect speech, Spotting error, Fill in the blanks, Cloze test, Comprehensive passage and more.

4) General Awareness 

 General Awareness is a time saving section as you attempt only those questions, answers of which are known to you. Also, you can get high marks in this section by staying updated and being aware of Current Affairs of the past six months along with having knowledge of the History, Geography, Polity, Culture, Economic and Scientific development of India and its neighbouring countries.

Preparation Tips for SSC CHSL Tier-II Exam

The Tier-II exam of SSC CHSL is a descriptive test and is divided into two sections, that are Essay writing and Application/Letter writing. A time duration of 60 minutes will be given to the candidate to write an essay of 200-250 words and an application/letter of around 150-200 words. Topics pertaining to Ecological, Social and Environmental issues, Polity, Economy and Finance, Sports, Technology and more can be asked in Tier-II exam. So, candidates must remain up to date in these areas. Given below are some tips to prepare for this exam.

1) Read Newspaper Daily

It is advised to read renowned english newspapers and magazines daily. Also, there is no need to read every news or article in the newspaper. Candidates must only focus on reading editorials and news relating to the above mentioned areas. This practice will help them to develop knowledge and vocabulary and in articulating content while writing an essay. 

2) Improve Your Speed and Handwriting

It is very important for a candidate to write fast and at the same time have a neat and clean handwriting. This is because he/she will be only given 60 minutes to complete both essay writing and letter/application writing, and inability to complete them in the given timeline will result in loss of marks. Also, candidates must have a lucid handwriting, so that the examiner is able to understand what the candidate has written. To improve their handwriting and speed, candidates should practice essay writing daily or must have a daily writing habit.

3) Rectify Grammatical, Punctuation and Silly Spelling Errors

Candidates performance in Tier-II (descriptive test) apart from that in Tier-I will be considered in final selection and allotment. With this said, candidates should minimise the number of grammatical, punctuation and spelling mistakes to score better in Tier-II exam. For this candidate should go through basics in grammar, develop a daily reading habit and have a good knowledge of vocabulary.
