USA: Despite recent worries about how unnatural post-processing can make images appear, night mode continues to be one of the iPhone's camera system's most impressive features. Here are some of the most amazing responses we received when we recently asked the 9to5Mac community on Twitter to share their favourite nighttime photos. The best Night mode photos I've seen are shown below, along with instructions on how to use it.

Your iPhone has a special Night mode that you might not even be aware of. You don't have to swipe or toggle between a photo taken in normal mode and one taken in Night mode, unlike other Camera app modes. When it detects a low-light environment, night mode automatically activates and adjusts.

When enabled, it greatly enhances photos by lengthening the camera's exposure time on your iPhone. The outcome can lead to some pretty amazing low-light photographs.

Use of Night mode:

The grey or yellow moon icon won't appear unless you're in a low- or medium-light setting because you can't manually activate Night mode for any setting.

This is how it goes:

  • Go to the photo mode in the Camera app after opening it. Find the moon icon in the left upper corner (bottom left in landscape orientation).
  • If it is greyed out, night mode is available but is not automatically turned on because the scene is too bright.
  • The moon icon is automatically enabled for your scene and available for use if it is highlighted in yellow.
  • To change the exposure time, tap the upward-pointing arrow, followed by the yellow moon icon at the bottom.
  • Finally, keep your iPhone as still as you can while taking a picture in Night mode. For how long is indicated by the yellow moon icon, and a countdown will also be visible above the shutter button.
