Beijing: Information and communications technologies, or ICTs, will enable industry digitization, spark innovation, and greenlight other industries, according to a recent statement by a tech executive.

Philip Wang, Huawei's executive vice president for the North Africa region, said ICT is "greening other industries" in terms of "enabling impact".

According to Wang, "5G, artificial intelligence, data analytics and cloud computing will all improve industrial processes in a way that reduces energy use and carbon emissions."

The remarks were made during a session sponsored by the Global Innovation Hub (UGIH) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at the 27th Conference of the Parties, or COP27, in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

Wang claimed that 5G wireless base stations could automatically turn off when there is no data traffic, saving energy, just as ICT enables a smart streetlight to turn off automatically when no one is around. Does not happen.

Base stations have antennas and demand a power supply. In Nigeria and Angola, Huawei is replacing diesel generators with solar panels, which provide a cleaner source of electricity. The business also unveiled a green 5G antenna that uses half the transmission power to cover an area of up to 500 meters. This results in a 30% reduction in energy usage.

Luis Neves, CEO of the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), also spoke during the session and emphasized that the climate change conversation must be digitally focused.

"I am confident that we can build a strong machine to drive the sustainability agenda and move rapidly toward a world where 10 billion people can live healthy lives," Neves said. "And companies must consider both their carbon footprint and their human footprint."

To achieve this, a standard for measuring network energy usage has been proposed by ITU-T members including Huawei. The network carbon intensity energy metric standard was accepted by ITU-T as Recommendation ITU-T L.1333 on 19 October.

According to Nompilo Morafo, chief sustainability and corporate affairs officer at MTN Group, the secret to achieving net zero goals is sustainable, measurable action.

The use of digital technologies has the potential to significantly increase the production of green energy and the efficiency of energy use by all industries during this journey.
