Bangalore: Mohammed Arif, an accused in the old Hubballi riots case in Karnataka, tried to commit suicide by drinking turpentine in jail. However, after receiving the information, the jail authorities immediately admitted him to the hospital. It is being told that he is now out of danger, soon he will be discharged. On April 16, at midnight, a mob of about 1,000 people (almost all of them Muslims) attacked the old Hubli police station. Twelve police officers were injured in the incident.

According to information, 146 accused, including AIMIM leader Dadapir Bettegri and councillor Nazir Ahmad Honyal, have been arrested so far in connection with the attack on Old Hubli police station. Of these, 145 accused have been remanded in 14-day judicial custody in jails in Hubli, Dharwad, Ballari and Kalaburagi, while one of the main accused is in police custody. Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai had described the violence as a big conspiracy.

CM Bommai had said that if a police station has been attacked by a mob in a planned and organised manner, it is a serious issue. State Home Minister Araga Gyanendra had also said that the incident could be pre-planned. The mob was pelting stones at the police station when the police had to resort to lathi-charge to control the crowd. However, when the situation did not come under control, the police had to fire tear gas shells.
