Hugo Gaston, world rank 239, a 20 year old wild card is the last French man standing at the French open. Earlier Benoit Paire crashed out meekly by Coria and Pierre-Hugues Herbert missed an opportunity to beat sixth seed Alexander Zverev on Wednesday in the second round. On the same day, the qualifier Benjamin Bonzi lost to Jannifer Sinner of Italy with performance of 2-6, 4-6, 4-6 and Paire with Coria performed to get 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3,6-1.

It is the first time in the history since 2010, only one French man entered the third round at Roland Carros, but Pair, who admitted this week stated that he was ‘tired mentally’. He was confined in the hotel room at US open after mixed COVID-19 results. Eighth seed players Gael Monfils, Richard Gasquet and Gilles Simon were eliminated in the first round whereas Jo-Wilfried Tsonga didn’t take part in the tournament. Paire said, “Gael did not train like crazy (during lockdown). He likes to play in front of a crowd. A Roland Garros like this makes him sad. I think it’s hard for him. But he’s still the world number nine”.

Herbert came close to upsetting sixth seed Zverev before losing 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4. He took full advantage of the German’s early jitters but cracked when about to win the second set tiebreak. “People are again going to say; once again it’s a Frenchman who tanked a match. I had it in my racket and I messed up”, Herbert said.In spite of Corona, French open started September 21 and ends on October 11, 2020.
