UNITED STATES OF AMERICA: Csaba Korosi, a Hungarian diplomat, has been elected president of the United Nations General Assembly's upcoming 77th session.
Korosi was reportedly chosen by acclamation during a General Assembly plenary session on Tuesday, as his candidacy was not challenged. He will succeed current Maldives President Abdulla Shahid as President of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2022.
Korosi outlined five priorities for his presidency in his post-election speech to the United Nations General Assembly: uphold the UN Charter's basic principles; make significant and measurable progress in sustainability transformation; seek integrated and systemic solutions; strengthen the role of science in decision-making; and increase solidarity to better address the world's crises.
"We are experiencing global, numerous, and interconnected food, energy, and debt crises, with water issues appearing to be the next imminent threat," he stated. Because of global supply constraints and rising costs, 49 million people in 43 countries are already facing food insecurity. Oceans have never been as acidic and warm as they will be in 2022 as a result of ongoing climate emergencies, with sea levels establishing a new high. Biodiversity losses are also at an all-time high, he added.
