Shillong: A man committed suicide after killing his wife at Mawiyaban near Sijlih village in West Khasi Hills. This incident happened on Tuesday. The villagers informed the police. According to reports, the police found the husband hanging from the ceiling on the spot. The wife's body was lying on the bed in the same room. The six-month-old child was lying on the bed. And he was admitted to a local hospital in Nongstoin. In the morning, the villagers informed the local authorities after hearing the continuous crying of the child. Crime scene unit was dispatched from Shillong after the incident came to light. Police suspect that husband Bose Kharbani (25) killed his wife Rosemary Lingkhoi (26) with a knife found in the room. A case has been registered under Nongstoin Police Station and investigation is on. It was told that the forensic report is also awaited by the police.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, the crime rate (per 100,000 population) in India increased from 383.5 in 2018 and 385.5 in 2019 to 487.8 in 2020. Crimes such as rape, kidnapping and crimes against children saw a decline in 2020, while crimes related to disobeying a public servant increased by 21%. In 2018, a total of 5 million cognizable offenses were registered, including 3 million Indian Penal Code (IPC) offenses and 2 million Special and Local Law (SLL) offences. The average charge-sheeting rate for 2020 is 82.5%.

Northeast India has consistently reported the lowest incidence of crime, with four of the five least crime-prone states from the region. Nagaland has the lowest registered crime rate in the country (69.4 per lakh population), although it has risen to 44. It also had the lowest incidence of crime based on the nation's share. Among the cities, Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Surat and Mumbai have the highest number of recorded crimes in 2020.
