Hyderabad: As part of the Charminar Pedestrian Project (CPP), the MA&UD Wing had started restoration work five months ago at a cost of Rs 80 lakh. As part of this, the encroachments near the four arches in the premises of the historic Charminar have been demolished and work has been started. Srinivas Sulge, Conservation Architect and Managing Director of Lakshmi Hericon Pvt Ltd said, “The conservation and restoration of the four arches is being done by adopting traditional techniques.

In order to protect the heritage structures from rain, waterproofing was done after the shed. During the completion of the lime concrete overlay and throughout the process, handmade clay tiles and organic additives are used." He shared that during the process, several intervention decisions were taken based on the assessment. "A building that commanded encroached upon, that too was demolished to protect the structure. The condition of the arch was so bad that it had to be closed with brickwork and some part of the arch was also removed and rebuilt," he said.

He said that due to the rains, several layers of lime plaster have been swept away making the entire structure shabby and distributing its homogeneity. However, these issues were addressed with the scraping of the previous layers of plaster, the symmetry reworked and re-plastered. “The floor of the structure, which was rarely used, had been neglected and neglected for decades. Special attention was given to this by giving plaster finishes besides realigning the slopes to drain rain water,” he said. Said that a new system of drains was designed and installed. He said that a heritage lighting scheme would also be set up to attract tourists and visitors.
