Angelina Jolie said she was "proud" to meet the "brave" US gymnasts who testified on Capitol Hill about the FBI's failed investigation into their sexual assault accusations against former team doctor Larry Nassar.
On Wednesday, before they testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee, the “Maleficent” actress shared a photo of herself standing with several of the former and present athletes. She posted the photo with gymnasts McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Maggie Nichols, Kaylee Lorincz, and Jessica Howard, saying, "I'm in awe of their courage and dedication to avoiding future failures to investigate abuse."
"Over 100 victims might have been spared the torture," Aly Raisman stated in her testimony. All we needed was one responsible adult to act.' She went on to say, "Sending support and respect to them, as well as to those who are experiencing this tragedy so that system improvements can take place."
Jolie, 46, said in the caption that she was in Washington, DC, to speak with lawmakers regarding the renewal of the Violence Against Women Act and FBI reforms. She used the hashtag "#StopViolenceAgainstWomen" at the end of her message. After more than 150 victims alleged Nassar sexually assaulted them over a 20-year period, he was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in jail in 2018. “I just signed your death warrant,” Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said at the sentencing.
Aquilina said: “Sir, I hope that — sir. I hope you are shaken to your core. Your victims are clearly shaken to the core.” Addressing the victims later, the judge said: “You are no longer victims. You are survivors. You’re very strong.”
