Dubai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) congratulated former Australian fast bowler Merv Hughes on his 60th birthday on Tuesday, complementing his handlebar moustache and tweeting, "Happy Birthday, Merv Hughes."

Hughes played 53 Tests and 33 One-Day Internationals in his more than 15-year competitive career, taking 212 and 38 wickets respectively. He was a crowd favourite due to his on-field antics and his hefty physique.

The ICC took to Twitter to say, "Is it possible to have the best moustache in cricket history? (Disguised face emoji). Merv Hughes, happy birthday! (The symbol for a shortcake.)" The tweet attracted thousands of reactions in a matter of minutes, with admirers posting photos of Indian Air Force fighter pilot Abhinandan, who was held on the Pakistani side when his plane crashed, but was released a few days later.

"What about Me, An all-rounder Abhinandan!!" one of the admirers remarked alongside a photo of Abhinandan, who had a moustache similar to Hughes'. Hughes is best remembered for his Ashes performance in 1993. After bowling partner Craig McDermott was ruled out, the big bowler bowled nearly 300 overs in six Tests, taking 31 wickets as Australia cruised to a 4-1 series victory.
