Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) President Vinay Sahasrabuddhe has stated that India has never been a religious country nor can it ever happen. This was stated by the ICCR, an autonomous organization of the Government of India, in response to a question from the Hudson Institute thinktank.

During an event in the US, ICCR President Sahasrabuddha said that pluralism is an integral part of India's idea. While India has never been a religious nation nor can it ever be. Bharat Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar is a country on the path of social and economic democracy. The event on "Possibilities and Challenges for New India" has been organized by millennials stating that there is a need to prevent fragmentation within India.

Replying to a question on the violence of Hudson Scholar Aparna Pandey, he further said that the motives and intentions of the BJP-led government cannot be questioned. Such incidents have also been given more attention in the media since the BJP came to power. Were such incidents not there in earlier Governments? Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself has repeatedly expressed concern over incidents of violence and had also directed him to stop the recurrence," he said.
