I think it is needless to say that Iceland is the top travel destination around the globe.  Let me tell you that the country is nothing less than Mother Nature's own work of art! Adding more power to this is the Global Peace Index (GPI) rankings for 2016 which names Iceland the most peaceful country in the world for the sixth consecutive time. The last time they slipped from the top slot to the second position was in 2010, that too after being table toppers for 2008 and 2009.

Going by the numbers, it is rather easy to assume that Iceland is the safest country to visit, barring of course, any natural calamity! As travelers, we don’t usually put much thought into many hidden (or unseen) aspects of a foreign land once we sort out our itinerary and room bookings. But then we have the Institute for Economics and Peace (the body that governs GPI) to do that for us! They keep in consideration key areas like political or military stability, the presence and prevalence of nuclear weapons, the law and order situation and the effectiveness of the police force and security personnel.

The low murder rate of the country assures both locals and travelers of a peaceful time amid breathtaking landscapes. Iceland spends $242 million on violence control which is way lower than many countries (for reference, UK which came in at number 47 in GPI, spends $136 billion on the same territory). Maybe the highest amount of violence that this country witness is on the sets of Game of Thrones! The immensely popular show features many Icelandic destinations when it comes to the frozen but beautiful Beyond the Wall. Many of the scenes and fights featuring everyone’s favorite Jon Snow are shot in this stunning and yeah, peaceful country.
