ICMR issues treatment guidelines for 51 common illness

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has published a set of new standard treatment recommendations for 54 prevalent illnesses spanning 11 specialties, for use by physicians at all levels of public health care.

Volume III of the "Standard Treatment Workflows" aims to address issues related to, among other things, illogical medication use, overdiagnosis and underdiagnosis, and subpar referral procedures.
The book ICMR Standard Treatment Workflows - Volume III, which covers 54 disorders under 11 specialties, and a mobile app were both released on Tuesday by Dr. Vinod K. Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog, according to a statement from the ICMR on Wednesday.

Prof. (Dr.) Balram Bhargava, Director General of the ICMR and Secretary of the DHR, said: "Primary care doctors, who are doing an outstanding job, are primarily responsible for providing healthcare in the outlying areas. The Standard Treatment Workflows will assist these doctors stay current and will give them general instructions on how to treat common illnesses." Paul pointed out that operational research should be used to assess the application of Standard Treatment Workflows (STWs) at different levels of the public healthcare system.

He said that a strong dissemination strategy that involves numerous stakeholders and international dissemination must be planned.

The ICMR released volume-I with 53 conditions in 2019 and volume-II with 18 conditions exclusively focused on tuberculosis in March this year.
