The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has imposed a fine of Rs 2.97 crore on Idea Cellular in terms of charging customers more. On the call to BSNL and MTNL's network, Idea had charged more than its customers.

TRAI has instructed them to deposit the penalty amount in the Telecom Education and Protection Fund (TCEPF) in such a way that the company can not refund this money to its customers. For this, the company has been given 15 days from the date of receipt of the order.

It is being told that this whole case is in 2005. At that time, the Department of Telecom had amended licenses and allowed inter-service sector connectivity to telecom operators in four states - Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamilnadu and Uttar Pradesh. Under the amendment, all calls to call routing in these four states were considered as local calls.

TRAI said that despite the amendment, many operators paid more for calling on BSNL and MTNL Network. Due to not having a recorded call data record available, Idea said on behalf of the company that they will not be able to return the charged to the customers.
