'If Sharjeel Imam gets bail, then he can incite riots..,' said Delhi Police in HC

New Delhi: Opposing the bail plea of Delhi riots accused and JNU alumnus Sharjeel Imam, the Delhi Police has filed its reply in the Delhi High Court. In the court, the police said that if granted bail, Sharjeel Imam can influence the witnesses by threatening them and re-engaging in riot-like activities.

Earlier, the Delhi High Court had sought a response from the Delhi Police in the case of making inflammatory speeches and instigating people during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The police also said that he also tried to spread false rumours of genocide in Assam through his speeches. He through his speeches, instigated a particular religious community of Assam to cut off from central India. The statements made in the speech come under Section 124A/153A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The police also said that the location (CDR) of the accused's phone was at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) on December 13, 2019, and at Shaheen Bagh on December 15.

In its chargesheet, the police said that Sharjeel, through his speeches, has created panic among the people of a particular community over these two laws and incited them against the government. While this law is yet to be implemented in the rest of the country except Assam. A Delhi court had on January 24, 2022, ordered the imposition of several other sections including sedition, punishment for unlawful activities (UAPA) against Sharjeel Imam, the main accused in connection with the Delhi riots. The sections will be invoked over the toxic speeches made by Sharjeel during the anti-CAA protests in Aligarh Muslim University (UP) and the Jamia area (Delhi).
