On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of India decided to hear the plea filed by Indian Institute of Technology's LGBT alumni association. The plea has been submitted in the context of scrapping Section 377 of Indian Penal Code (IPC), which criminalises homosexuality.

According to the media reports, the top court has however not fixed any date for the hearing. Earlier on April 27, 2018, Ashok Rao Kavi of Humsafar Trust and Arif Jaffar filed petitions against Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which criminalises homosexuality.

The plea comes after six days of hotelier Keshav Suri's plea. Keshav Suri filed the plea regarding the same on the top court. Apex court agreed to hear the plea on May 1 as they all sought for it.

Recently, in response to the Suri's plea, on April 23 the apex court asked the Centre's reply on the plea seeking scrapping of Section 377.

In the case, earlier in 2009, Section 377 had been decriminalised by the Delhi High Court. But unfortunately, the order was later set aside by a Supreme-Court bench.

According to the reports in ANI, categorised as an unnatural offence, consensual sexual intercourse between persons of same-sex is termed 'against the order of nature' under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and can be punishable by life imprisonment.
