IIT Madras Develops Solid Waste Combustor 'Rotary Furnace'

CHENNAI: IIT Madras has developed an indigenous municipal solid waste combustor pilot plant based on a first-of-its-kind 'Rotary Furnace Technology' to efficiently handle un-segregated municipal solid waste generated in India.

This Combustor Plant, which was inaugurated on Friday by V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, was installed within the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited factory at Trichy's Combined Cycle Demonstration Plant.

In India, MSW is produced at a pace of roughly 133 million tonnes per year, with over 85% of it ending up in landfills. Tamil Nadu generates 14,600 tonnes of solid trash every day, with roughly 5,400 tonnes generated in Chennai (TNPCB, 2021). MSW production is expanding at a rate of 1.3 percent per year, with a current per capita production of 0.5-1 kg/day.

More than 2,500 tonnes of bio-inorganic waste, including plastics and high calorific value matter, are thrown in landfills per day after being separated and used for composting, vermin composting, and biogas generation.

This facility, which was built entirely in-house, can process up to one tonne of un-segregated municipal solid waste (MSW) per day and generate steam as well as clean gaseous emissions and ash as a by-product.
By 2025, India's solid waste management business would be worth USD 13.62 billion.
