Ahmedabad: The family of an 18-year-old student named Darshan Solanki, who allegedly committed suicide at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay on Sunday, February 12 has claimed that the boy was murdered.

Solanki's family claimed on Wednesday that he experienced caste discrimination at IIT Mumbai and that there was foul play involved in his death.

On Sunday, the 18-year-old student allegedly committed suicide at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in Mumbai by jumping from the seventh floor of the building of the hostel.

The Alternative Dispute Resolution was filed by Powai police, who also launched a more thorough investigation. At the IIT Bombay in Mumbai, Solanki, who was originally from Ahmedabad, was pursuing a B Tech degree.

As soon as the information about the suicide was received, the police arrived the spot and took him to the hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. The authorities are looking into the suicide of the student but have not yet determined its cause.

In the meantime, IIT Bombay firmly denied in a statement on Tuesday that caste discrimination was the cause of the first-year BTech student's death, as claimed in various news sources.

"Making such claims when the police are still looking into the issue is wrong. There is no evidence of the student experiencing such discrimination, at least based on early feedback from friends. We ask that these false accusations not be circulated "said the institute in the statement.
