After getting authority from the government, NHAI will not have to depend on other authorities. Under the existing rules, NHAI has no authority to take action against vehicles parked illegally on highways or service lanes. At present, NHAI can only lift such vehicles and take them to the side. But the authority has been given decision-making powers under the new notification.

You also need to know that sub-sections 24 and 27 of the National Highway Control (Land and Traffic) Act 2002 empowers all project directors to take decisions on land management and traffic management issues of the highway. In the recent notification, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation and the National Highway Wing's PWD will have the authority to take decisions related to land and traffic management. Apart from this, prevention of possession of highway land, removal of encroachers and its recovery are also included.
