NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said that  a Low Pressure Area (LPA) has formed over the South Andaman Sea and neighbouring southeast Bay of Bengal due to the effect of cyclonic circulation over the region.

According to IMD's meteorological analysis based on 5.30 a.m. observations, the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to mid-tropospheric levels and is very likely to move northwards and intensify into a depression over the next 48 hours.

Because of this formation, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands until May 8, and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Andaman Sea for the next three days, or into the southeast and central Bay of Bengal for the following five days.

Squally conditions are expected to prevail over the Andaman Sea and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal, with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph with gusts to 60 kmph, increasing to 55-65 kmph with gusts to 75 kmph by May 8 over the north Andaman Sea and adjoining Southeast and Eastcentral Bays of Bengal.
