IMD issues Yellow Alert in Himachal's 10 Districts

Himachal Pradesh is witnessing continuous rain since Tuesday. The rain is predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD)  From September 7 to 11, the meteorological agency has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall across ten plain and central hill districts of Himachal Pradesh. The districts of Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur have been issued with a yellow alert.

The entire state is expected to be hit by bad weather till September 13. According to the Shimla Meteorological Center, heavy rains might cause landslides in several locations. Since Wednesday morning, rain has lashed Mandi, Kangra and other areas of the state. The Shimla-Kinnaur highway (NH-5) has been closed again after a massive landslide near Jeori in the Rampur sub-division of the Shimla district.

The highway was shut on Monday when a landslide damaged and obstructed a 100-meter stretch of it. The National Highway Authority of India and the Public Works Department eventually cleared the roadway which was full of stone and debris.

On Tuesday evening, services on the Shimla-Kinnaur highway were restored and the road was reopened to one-way traffic. However, it was reopened on Wednesday morning after huge stones fell off the slope. The Shimla-Kinnaur route connects the mainland to important border districts of China. Commuters who utilize this roadway on a regular basis are experiencing difficulties.

The Kalka-Shimla National Highway was closed after a portion of the hill crumbled near Kandaghat in Solan district on Tuesday night. A landslide also occurred near the highway at around 9.15 pm. A large number of tourist vehicles, including common people, were stranded due to the halt in the movement of vehicles on the highway.
