New Delhi: The Monsoon session of Parliament concluded on Wednesday. Four bills were passed in the Rajya Sabha on the last day of Parliament proceedings, out of which the bill related to OBC is important. The Constitution Amendment Bill was discussed in the Rajya Sabha regarding the bill related to OBC reservation, after which it was passed unanimously. Earlier on Tuesday, this bill was passed in the Lok Sabha.

During the discussion in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, the opposition demanded the removal of the 50 percent limit on caste-based census and reservation. Leader of Opposition in the Upper House Mallikarjun Kharge said that the reservation limit should be removed, which is now 50 percent. If it is not removed, the purpose of the bill related to OBC reservation will be defeated, as the states should be given the power to increase the reservation. While Abhishek Manu Singhvi and RJD Manoj Kumar Jha demanded a caste census in the country to find out the number of OBCs, the opposition was strongly reprimanded by the government, with BJP's Sushil Modi claiming that OBC reservation is a part of the BJP. It came into existence due to efforts.

Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Ram Gopal Yadav said that the UP government is planning to remove Yadavs, Kurmis, and Gujjars from the list of Other Backward Classes (OBC). The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Seventh Amendment) Bill 2021. The bill was passed by a two-thirds majority of the members present in the house. The aim is to restore the power that allowed states and union territories (UTs) to make their own OBC lists. This was demanded by many regional parties and even the ruling party's own OBC leaders.
