Recently two miscreants were detained for pelting stones in the Newghat area of Dhubri town, where evictions on railway land have been underway since Thursday morning.

Alipur Railway Division gave notices to vacate the land encroached upon there in 2019 and again in 2020, according to a source in the district administration. Encroachers, on the other hand, made up a strong protest against eviction, pelting stones at the JCB excavator, breaking the glasses and stopping the eviction.

Dhubri Deputy Commissioner Ambamuthan MP and Superintendent of Police Abhijit Gaurav rushed to the scene after hearing of the incident and brought the situation under control.

Partha Pratim Gogoi, Officer-in-Charge of Dhubri Police Station, told media that two people suspected of putting up resistance and pelting stones were arrested and are being probed. According to a railway officer, evictions on railway land would continue until the encroachment on the old railway track is eliminated. After the eviction, a new railway track will be erected to connect it to the Dhubri River Port for commodities traffic, according to the official.
