Warsaw As spending power was further diminished by inflation in February, retail sales in Poland fell for the second consecutive month at the fastest rate since 2020, according to a report released on Tuesday by Statistics Poland.

The figures showed that last month's sector sales decreased by 5% year over year, which was significantly more than the predicted 1.4% decline. Retail experienced a monthly drop of 3.6% from January.

"Retail sales of goods decreased by 5% in February, according to calculations based on information from stores with at least 10 employees. At the same time, this fall was 0.3% in January, according to the report.

The lacklustre turnover is attributed by economists to the ongoing pressure that spiralling inflation is exerting on households' real disposable incomes and purchasing power. Furniture and appliance sales fell by 10.3% in February, while sales of other durable goods fell by 12.3% in stores.

Food purchases in Poland decreased for the second consecutive month, declining 4.6% in February compared to the same month last year. Additionally, the data revealed a 26.2% annual drop in fuel sales. Inflation in Poland is at its highest level since 1996. According to the most recent statistics from Statistics Poland, consumer prices increased 18.4% year over year in February, up from 16.6% the month prior.
