On Sunday, a bridge across the Desang River in the Bokota area of Sivasagar district collapsed, severing two people. A stone-filled dumper was crossing the bridge around 9 a.m., and a serious accident was averted since there was very little traffic on the bridge.
The bridge between Sepon and Sunpura began construction in 1971 and was finished in 1977. In the past decade, the bridge had deteriorated significantly. From the Bokota region, transport links to Sivasagar, Nazira, and Simaluguri has been entirely cut off.
Meanwhile, locals flooded the streets to protest the ONGC after the authorities failed to respond to their repeated pleas for the bridge to be repaired, despite the fact that ONGC heavy vehicles constantly pass by the bridge. The Deputy Commissioner of Sivasagar arrived on the scene and promised an inquiry into the matter.
A bye-election was conducted in the Thowra seat a few months ago, and then-State Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that building on the bridge will begin soon while campaigning for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Sushanta Borgohain.
