New Delhi: Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot has proposed Rahul Gandhi as the national president of the Congress at a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC). According to sources, Ashok Gehlot proposed at a CWC meeting that Rahul Gandhi should lead the Congress, which also received the support of all members of the CWC. Right now, Sonia Gandhi is the executive president of the country's oldest party.

It may be recalled that Rahul Gandhi took over as Congress president in 2017. But he stepped out in 2019 after the Congress suffered a crushing defeat in the Lok Sabha elections. There was an uproar within the Congress after the resignation of Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad Rahul. Several senior Congress leaders also tried to convince Rahul, but failure was a setback. Sonia Gandhi, who led the Congress for 19 years thereafter, had agreed to return as interim president.

This is not the first time that Rajasthan CM Gehlot has demanded Rahul Gandhi as congress president. Earlier, in a meeting of the CWC held in June last year, Gehlot had also demanded that Rahul be made the president. Gehlot had said that it was time for Rahul to take over the reins of the organization once again. Gehlot also received the support of former Uttarakhand CM and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat. However, other senior leaders did not respond to it.
