Sedans making a comeback in the era of SUVs

SUVs dominate the Indian automobile market. Due to the SUV craze and the festive season, the Indian automobile industry has registered a growth of 32.4 percent in sales in October. But despite not doing well in sales in this category, some companies are not able to stop focusing on sedans.

The country's largest carmaker Maruti has introduced the new Dzire sedan with a highly upgraded version earlier this month. In order to increase the sales numbers with the new model. Talking about some reports, Maruti MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi has said about this, "It is not just an upgrade, but we have added all new features including six airbags and 5-star safety rating. So that it can be made as good as possible." He said that in the era of SUVs, it is important that sedans should not be left behind in modernization.

Honda has generally been a sedan-centric company. For a long time now, the Honda City has been the company's best-selling car. Honda's vice president Kunal Bahl says the company has also invested heavily in its entry-level sedan Amaze, which has been upgraded "just for the Indian market". He adds, "While SUVs are certainly the flavour of the season, the real feel of a car still comes from 3-box sedans and there are many customers who want them. Also, many people are moving away from hatchbacks and moving towards feature-rich and design-rich sedans."

Despite the sedan market share falling from 20 per cent to 9 per cent, Volkswagen and Skoda have also entered the market with their twin sedans (VW's Virtus and Skoda's Slavia). These cars have a ground clearance of around 180 mm, which puts them at par with some entry-level SUV cars.

If reports are to be believed, this is not limited to only mainstream car manufacturers, who are still crazy about sedans. Mercedes-Benz recently unveiled the new generation of its E-Class sedan. Which is not only the best-selling car in its portfolio, but is also the best-selling car in the luxury industry's line-up. MD and CEO Santosh Iyer has said that sedans still contribute 45 percent to Mercedes' Indian business.
