Moscow: Early on Thursday, the Finnish Border Guard reported that traffic at Finland's eastern border with Russia had "intensified" during the previous night, but added that everything was still under control.
Following President Vladimir Putin's order for military mobilisation, Finland is closely monitoring the situation in its neighbour, according to defence minister Antti Kaikkonen on Wednesday.

The head of international affairs for the Finnish border guard, Matti Pitkaniitty, told Reuters that "the number clearly has picked up."
He added that the situation was under control and border guards were on duty at nine checkpoints. "It is an exceptional number in that it clearly is busier," he said.

One-way flights out of Russia quickly sold out after Putin's announcement, which he made in an early-morning television address on Wednesday. The announcement sparked concerns that some men of fighting age would not be permitted to leave the country.

However, Pitkaniitty noted that on Wednesday, fewer people crossed the border than on the weekend.
He claimed that on Wednesday, 4,824 Russians crossed the eastern border into Finland, an increase from the 3,133 who did so a week earlier.
According to a police official, there had been no changes in the quantity of Russians entering the Nordic nation from northern Norway.
Soelve Solheim, section chief for operational immigration control at Finnmark police, said there had been "no changes."
