The battle between India skipper Virat Kohli and James Anderson may not take place in the fourth Test at The Oval as the veteran England pace bowler could be rested and return only for the fifth Test in Manchester. Both teams are forced to rotate bowlers due to the short turnaround in the last three Test matches, which must be played within three weeks. While India has already stated their intentions, the English team may follow suit.

"What I don't want to do is break them. We've got a lot of cricket in front of us. The Tests are coming thick and fast now. Back-to-back, it is difficult," said England head coach Chris Silverwood to the media while pointing out the workload of his two new-ball bowlers, Anderson and Ollie Robinson.

Anderson, who is 39 years old, has now bowled more overs in the first three Tests than any of the Indian seamers. He has bowled 116.3 overs, two ball less than Ollie Robinson (116.5), who has bowled the most overs in the series. "When we're out on the field, these guys give it their all, and we have to make sure we're taking care of them. But, for the time being, I will refrain from making any decisions or judgments " he added.

Anderson, on the other hand, made it clear before the series that he intends to play every Test match. Despite a niggle in the run-up to the second Test at Lord's, he showed up to play.
