New Delhi: India's solar power generation capacity has surpassed the noteworthy milestone of 70,000 Megawatts. Leading the charge in renewable energy technology adoption among all the states is Rajasthan, as affirmed by R K Singh, the Minister for Power, New & Renewable Energy.

Out of the comprehensive capacity totaling 70,096 MW as of June 2023, Rajasthan holds the lion's share with an installed capacity of 17,839 MW. Following closely are Gujarat with 10,133 MW, Karnataka with 9,050 MW, Tamil Nadu with 6,892 MW, Maharashtra with 4,870 MW, Telangana with 4,695 MW, and Andhra Pradesh with 4,552 MW.

Comparatively, other significant states contribute less: Madhya Pradesh contributes 3,021 MW, Uttar Pradesh contributes a modest 2,526 MW, Punjab reaches 1,190 MW, Haryana provides 1,106 MW, Chhattisgarh contributes 962 MW, and Bihar adds 203 MW to the solar power capacity.

R K Singh stated in a parliamentary response, "The nation possesses an estimated solar power potential of 748,990 MW. As of now, this potential remains significantly untapped. The government is diligently working to harness this potential through a variety of schemes and initiatives."

Several schemes and programs have been put in place to bolster renewable energy, particularly solar power, across the country. These initiatives encompass allowing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of up to 100 percent through the automatic route, exempting Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) charges for inter-state sale of solar and wind power for projects to be operational by June 30, 2025, and outlining the Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) trajectory until the year 2029-30.

R K Singh also highlighted additional measures undertaken by the government, such as the establishment of new transmission lines and the augmentation of sub-station capacity under the Green Energy Corridor Scheme for efficient evacuation of renewable power. This includes the formulation of standards for the deployment of solar photovoltaic systems and the establishment of a Project Development Cell to attract and facilitate investments.
